This will be a 3 part series that provides some thoughts about earning income in today's business climate.
Part 1 will introduce a couple small business success stories
Part 2 will discuss some of the most recession proof services to offer
Part 3 will focus on specific ideas relevant to you and Montgomery.
I hear about how bad the economy is from those I come into contact with on a daily basis.
It seems to be the convenient catch all excuse for everything wrong with their current job or job search.

They are often perplexed when I dont affirm their woeful viewpoints because in fact I am excited about the opportunities that are being created for the big thinking entrepreneurs.
Sure I read and hear all the numbers about unemployment and how people are not hiring.
My point is that those numbers dont necessarily mean anything to an individual who recognizes a great chance to create his own income. Here are two examples of small businesses that have profited from the recession
Sung Kim is a shoe repair specialist whose business is benefiting because less people are buying new shoes.
How about this Oprah feature about one of a number of companies profiting from the poor housing market.
Okay so maybe fixing footwear or disposing of others belongings doesnt appeal to you, there are other things to do....
Part 2 of Recession provides opportunity will share some great recession proof services in general.

Nearly one in three US homeowners owe more on mortgage than their home is worth
The downturn in home prices has left about 20% of U.S. homeowners
owing more on a mortgage than their homes are worth, according to one
new study, signaling additional challenges to the Obama
administration’s efforts to stabilize the housing market.
The increase in the number of such “underwater” borrowers comes amid
signs that falling prices are making homes more affordable for
first-time buyers and others who have been shut out of the housing
market. But falling prices also make it more difficult for homeowners
who get into financial trouble to refinance or sell their homes, and
for others to take advantage of lower interest rates.
For instance, fewer will qualify to take advantage of a key
component of the Obama administration’s plan to stabilize the housing
market. Under the plan, announced in February, as many as five million
homeowners whose loans are owned or guaranteed by government-controlled
mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can refinance their
mortgages, but only if the mortgage loan is a maximum of 105% of the
home’s value.
Government officials are considering an increase in that limit.
“It’s a question that we’re looking at,” said James Lockhart, director
of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates Fannie and
Freddie.
Real-estate Web site Zillow.com said that overall, the number of
borrowers who are underwater climbed to 20.4 million at the end of the
first quarter from 16.3 million at the end of the fourth quarter. The
latest figure represents 21.9% of all homeowners, according to Zillow,
up from 17.6% in the fourth quarter and 14.3% in the third quarter.
“What’s going on here is that you don’t have any markets that have
turned around and you have new markets, like Dallas, that have joined
the ranks” of communities where home prices have fallen, said Stan
Humphries, a Zillow.com vice president.
Borrowers who owe far more than their home is worth may also be less
likely to participate in another part of the government’s housing plan,
which provides incentives for mortgage companies to modify loans to
make payments more affordable. Thomas Lawler, an independent housing
economist, said borrowers who owe 30% more than their homes are worth
are far more likely to walk away from their property than those who owe
just 5% or 10% more and expect prices to rebound. More than one in 10
borrowers with a mortgage owed 110% or more of their home’s value at
the end of last year, according to First American CoreLogic.
There are some recent indications that the housing market could be
beginning to stabilize. The National Association of Realtors pending
home-sales index, for instance, increased 3.2% in March.

Just how many borrowers are underwater is a matter of some dispute,
with the answer depending in part on assumptions regarding home values
and mortgage debt outstanding. Variations in home-price estimates can
make a major difference in the number of borrowers who are underwater.
In addition, borrowers who are already in the foreclosure process may
be counted as being underwater if the title to their property hasn’t
changed hands.
Kenneth Rosen, chairman of the Fisher Center for Real Estate and
Urban Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, said
underwater estimates can be too high if they use price data that
includes a large number of foreclosures. Foreclosed homes tend to sell
at a discount, he said, making it appear that prices have fallen more
than they actually have.
Moody’s Economy.com estimates that of 78.2 million owner-occupied
single-family homes, 14.8 million borrowers, or 19%, owed more than
their homes were worth at the end of the first quarter, up from 13.6
million at the end of last year.
Part of the reason Zillow’s numbers are higher may be that it looks
at mortgage debt taken out at the time the home was purchased and
doesn’t adjust for any payments since made toward the outstanding
mortgage balance. It also assumes that borrowers who took out
home-equity lines of credit at the time of purchase have fully tapped
the amount they can borrow. That approach can overstate the portion of
borrowers who are underwater, Mr. Zandi said.
Mr. Humphries of Zillow calls his methodology conservative and said
Zillow’s use of pricing for individual homes provides a better measure
of home valuations than Mr. Zandi’s approach, which relies on
market-level estimates of home values. He adds that Zillow doesn’t
include foreclosures in its pricing models.

Finally, the truth about Area 51
After decades of denying the facility’s existence, five former insiders speak out
by Annie Jacobsen
Area 51. It’s the most famous military
institution in the world that doesn’t officially exist. If it did, it
would be found about 100 miles outside Las Vegas in Nevada’s high
desert, tucked between an Air Force base and an abandoned nuclear
testing ground. Then again, maybe not— the U.S. government refuses to
say. You can’t drive anywhere close to it, and until recently, the
airspace overhead was restricted—all the way to outer space. Any
mention of Area 51 gets redacted from official documents, even those
that have been declassified for decades.
It has become the holy grail for conspiracy theorists, with
UFOlogists positing that the Pentagon reverse engineers flying saucers
and keeps extraterrestrial beings stored in freezers. Urban legend has
it that Area 51 is connected by underground tunnels and trains to other
secret facilities around the country. In 2001, Katie Couric told Today Show audiences that 7 percent of Americans doubt the moon landing happened—that it was staged in the Nevada desert. Millions of X-Files fans believe the truth may be “out there,” but more likely it’s concealed inside Area 51’s Strangelove-esque hangars—buildings that, though confirmed by Google Earth, the government refuses to acknowledge.
The problem is the myths of Area 51 are hard to
dispute if no one can speak on the record about what actually happened
there. Well, now, for the first time, someone is ready to talk—in fact,
five men are, and their stories rival the most outrageous of rumors.
Colonel Hugh “Slip” Slater, 87, was commander of the Area 51 base in
the 1960s. Edward Lovick, 90, featured in “What Plane?” in
LA’s
March issue, spent three decades radar testing some of the world’s most
famous aircraft (including the U-2, the A-12 OXCART and the F-117).
Kenneth Collins, 80, a CIA experimental test pilot, was given the
silver star. Thornton “T.D.” Barnes, 72, was an Area 51
special-projects engineer. And Harry Martin, 77, was one of the men in
charge of the base’s half-million-gallon monthly supply of spy-plane
fuels. Here are a few of their best stories—
for the record:
On May 24, 1963, Collins flew out of Area 51’s restricted airspace
in a top-secret spy plane code-named OXCART, built by Lockheed Aircraft
Corporation. He was flying over Utah when the aircraft pitched, flipped
and headed toward a crash. He ejected into a field of weeds.
Almost 46 years later, in late fall of 2008, sitting in a coffee
shop in the San Fernando Valley, Collins remembers that day with the
kind of clarity the threat of a national security breach evokes: “Three
guys came driving toward me in a pickup. I saw they had the aircraft
canopy in the back. They offered to take me to my plane.” Until that
moment, no civilian without a top-secret security clearance had ever
laid eyes on the airplane Collins was flying. “I told them not to go
near the aircraft. I said it had a nuclear weapon on-board.” The story
fit right into the Cold War backdrop of the day, as many atomic tests
took place in Nevada. Spooked, the men drove Collins to the local
highway patrol. The CIA disguised the accident as involving a generic
Air Force plane, the F-105, which is how the event is still listed in
official records.

As for the guys who picked him up, they
were tracked down and told to sign national security nondisclosures. As
part of Collins’ own debriefing, the CIA asked the decorated pilot to
take truth serum. “They wanted to see if there was anything I’d
for-gotten about the events leading up to the crash.” The Sodium
Pento-thal experience went without a hitch—except for the reaction of
his wife, Jane.
“Late Sunday, three CIA agents brought me home. One drove my car;
the other two carried me inside and laid me down on the couch. I was
loopy from the drugs. They handed Jane the car keys and left without
saying a word.” The only conclusion she could draw was that her husband
had gone out and gotten drunk. “Boy, was she mad,” says Collins with a
chuckle.
At the time of Collins’ accident, CIA pilots had been flying spy
planes in and out of Area 51 for eight years, with the express mission
of providing the intelligence to prevent nuclear war. Aerial
reconnaissance was a major part of the CIA’s preemptive efforts, while
the rest of America built bomb shelters and hoped for the best.
“It wasn’t always called Area 51,” says Lovick, the physicist who
developed stealth technology. His boss, legendary aircraft designer
Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson, called the place Paradise Ranch to entice
men to leave their families and “rough it” out in the Nevada desert in
the name of science and the fight against the evil empire. “Test pilot
Tony LeVier found the place by flying over it,” says Lovick. “It was a
lake bed called Groom Lake, selected for testing because it was flat
and far from anything. It was kept secret because the CIA tested U-2s
there.”
When Frances Gary Powers was shot down
over Sverdlovsk, Russia, in 1960, the U-2 program lost its cover. But
the CIA already had Lovick and some 200 scientists, engineers and
pilots working at Area 51 on the A-12 OXCART, which would outfox Soviet
radar using height, stealth and speed.
Col. Slater was in the outfit of six pilots who flew OXCART missions
during the Vietnam War. Over a Cuban meat and cheese sandwich at the
Bahama Breeze restaurant off the Las Vegas Strip, he says, “I was
recruited for the Area after working with the CIA’s classified Black
Cat Squadron, which flew U-2 missions over denied territory in Mainland
China. After that, I was told, ‘You should come out to Nevada and work
on something interesting we’re doing out there.’ ”
Even though Slater considers himself a fighter pilot at heart—he
flew 84 missions in World War II—the opportunity to work at Area 51 was
impossible to pass up. “When I learned about this Mach-3 aircraft
called OXCART, it was completely intriguing to me—this idea of flying
three times the speed of sound! No one knew a thing about the program.
I asked my wife, Barbara, if she wanted to move to Las Vegas, and she
said yes. And I said, ‘You won’t see me but on the weekends,’ and she
said, ‘That’s fine!’ ” At this recollection, Slater laughs heartily.
Barbara, dining with us, laughs as well. The two, married for 63 years,
are rarely apart today.
“We couldn’t have told you any of this a year ago,” Slater says.
“Now we can’t tell it to you fast enough.” That is because in 2007, the
CIA began declassifying the 50-year-old OXCART program. Today, there’s
a scramble for eyewitnesses to fill in the information gaps. Only a few
of the original players are left. Two more of them join me and the
Slaters for lunch: Barnes, formerly an Area 51 special-projects
engineer, with his wife, Doris; and Martin, one of those overseeing the
OXCART’s specially mixed jet fuel (regular fuel explodes at extreme
height, temperature and speed), with his wife, Mary. Because the men
were sworn to secrecy for so many decades, their wives still get a kick
out of hearing the secret tales.
Barnes was married at 17 (Doris was 16). To support his wife, he
became an electronics wizard, buying broken television sets, fixing
them up and reselling them for five times the original price. He went
from living in bitter poverty on a Texas Panhandle ranch with no
electricity to buying his new bride a dream home before he was old
enough to vote. As a soldier in the Korean War, Barnes demonstrated an
uncanny aptitude for radar and Nike missile systems, which made him a
prime target for recruitment by the CIA—which indeed happened when he
was 22. By 30, he was handling nuclear secrets.
“The agency located each guy at the top of a certain field and put
us together for the programs at Area 51,” says Barnes. As a security
precaution, he couldn’t reveal his birth name—he went by the moniker
Thunder. Coworkers traveled in separate cars, helicopters and
airplanes. Barnes and his group kept to themselves, even in the mess
hall. “Our special-projects group was the most classified team since
the Manhattan Project,” he says.
Harry Martin’s specialty was fuel. Handpicked by the CIA from the
Air Force, he underwent rigorous psychological and physical tests to
see if he was up for the job. When he passed, the CIA moved his family
to Nevada. Because OXCART had to refuel frequently, the CIA kept
supplies at secret facilities around the globe. Martin often traveled
to these bases for quality-control checks. He tells of preparing for a
top-secret mission from Area 51 to Thule, Greenland. “My wife took one
look at me in these arctic boots and this big hooded coat, and she knew
not to ask where I was going.”
So, what of those urban legends—the UFOs studied in secret, the
underground tunnels connecting clandestine facilities? For decades, the
men at Area 51 thought they’d take their secrets to the grave. At the
height of the Cold War, they cultivated anonymity while pursuing some
of the country’s most covert projects. Conspiracy theories were left to
popular imagination. But in talking with Collins, Lovick, Slater,
Barnes and Martin, it is clear that much of the folklore was spun from
threads of fact.
As for the myths of reverse engineering of flying saucers, Barnes
offers some insight: “We did reverse engineer a lot of foreign
technology, including the Soviet MiG fighter jet out at the Area”—even
though the MiG wasn’t shaped like a flying saucer. As for the
underground-tunnel talk, that, too, was born of truth. Barnes worked on
a nuclear-rocket program called Project NERVA, inside underground
chambers at Jackass Flats, in Area 51’s backyard. “Three test-cell
facilities were connected by railroad, but everything else was
underground,” he says.
And the quintessential Area 51 conspiracy—that the Pentagon keeps
captured alien spacecraft there, which they fly around in restricted
airspace? Turns out that one’s pretty easy to debunk. The shape of
OXCART was unprece-dented, with its wide, disk-like fuselage designed
to carry vast quantities of fuel. Commercial pilots cruising over
Nevada at dusk would look up and see the bottom of OXCART whiz by at
2,000-plus mph. The aircraft’s tita-nium body, moving as fast as a
bullet, would reflect the sun’s rays in a way that could make anyone
think, UFO.
In all, 2,850 OXCART test flights were flown out of Area 51 while
Slater was in charge. “That’s a lot of UFO sightings!” Slater adds.
Commercial pilots would report them to the FAA, and “when they’d land
in California, they’d be met by FBI agents who’d make them sign
nondisclosure forms.” But not everyone kept quiet, hence the birth of
Area 51’s UFO lore. The sightings incited uproar in Nevada and the
surrounding areas and forced the Air Force to open Project BLUE BOOK to
log each claim.
Since only a few Air Force officials were cleared for OXCART (even
though it was a joint CIA/USAF project), many UFO sightings raised
internal military alarms. Some generals believed the Russians might be
sending stealth craft over American skies to incite paranoia and create
widespread panic of alien invasion. Today, BLUE BOOK findings are
housed in 37 cubic feet of case files at the National Archives—74,000
pages of reports. A keyword search brings up no mention of the
top-secret OXCART or Area 51.
Project BLUE BOOK was shut down in 1969—more than a year after
OXCART was retired. But what continues at America’s most clandestine
military facility could take another 40 years to disclose.

Start-Up Promises More Game Realism Engineers Say Technology Will Speed Production of Film-Like 3-D Images
A start-up founded by former Apple Inc. engineers said it has developed technology that could bring film-like realism to computer games and change the way movie makers and other design professionals work.
The San Francisco company, Caustic Graphics Inc., plans to exploit a technique called ray-tracing that generates extremely accurate three-dimensional images. Ray-tracing
is a mainstay of Hollywood studios, but remains out of reach for most
PC users. A single image can take hours to generate; rendering a film
can take months on hundreds of server systems.
Computer games and other PC software typically rely on a technology called rasterization. Though the results keep getting more realistic, developing an interactive form of ray-tracing has been a longtime quest in the computer industry.

Sponsored Links: Naples Window Cleaning | Florissant Insurance | Naples Trash Removal
Caustic Graphics’ technology helps computer-generated images look more like photographs.
Caustic, whose name refers to light rays reflecting
off a curved object, says it is close to achieving that goal. The
company says its software and chips allow graphics chips to carry out
ray-tracing calculations at a 20-fold speed-up compared with
existing PC hardware. It said it expects to deliver chips by early 2010
that will be about 200 times faster.
In a demonstration, Caustic executives manipulated a photo-quality image of a sports car, removing components and changing lighting and background settings to change reflections on the vehicle’s surface.
“It’s the first honest acceleration of ray-tracing I’ve seen,” said Jon Peddie, a market researcher in Tiburon, Calif., who specializes in graphics technology.
Caustic faces many challenges. They include larger competitors and the need to persuade PC users to buy a second add-in card containing its chips, in addition to conventional graphics accelerators.
Caustic is largely the brainchild of James McCombe, a 26-year-old native of Northern Ireland who worked on graphics technology
used in Apple’s iPhone and iPod. He left in 2006 with two other Apple
engineers to form Caustic, a closely held company that employs 35
people and has raised \$11 million.
Mr. McCombe said graphics chips have hundreds of specialized calculating engines that are particularly good at rasterization, which converts three-dimensional models into pixels on a computer screen. Ray-tracing,
by contrast, emulates the ways light rays bounce off objects in a
scene. Graphics chips can’t easily handle those complex calculations, which require extensive communication between processors. Caustic has developed ways to keep data flowing to them efficiently, Mr. McCombe said.
Armed with the technology, Caustic executives say, designers who now work with the software equivalent of stick figures could manipulate realistic designs — without having to stop to render their images periodically. “This would really represent a breakthrough for us,” said Ron Frankel, president of Proof Inc., which develops “pre-visualizations” to show film directors and designers how movie scenes might be shot.
The company hopes to initially target architects, engineers and animators, and later entertainment applications on PCs and gaming consoles. Mr. McCombe expects accelerator cards using its chips to cost about the same as existing graphics accelerators, adding that its circuitry eventually could be combined with graphics chips. High-end graphics cards typically cost several hundred dollars.
But exploiting Caustic’s chips will require modifications to existing ray-tracing programs. Other companies, meanwhile, are finding ways to do ray-tracing using the microprocessors in PCs, rather than graphics chips. One is Bunkspeed Inc., which has a program called HyperShot that can make photo-quality images from three-dimensional computer models.
Philip Lunn, Bunkspeed’s chief executive, says that Caustic also faces potential competition from larger chip makers that include Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp. The latter is collaborating with Mental Images GmbH, a software maker Nvidia acquired in 2007, to accelerate ray-tracing using graphics chips.
Mr.
McCombe “is one of the smartest people in the business,” says Rolf
Herken, Mental Images’ chief executive and chief technology officer. But “whether Caustic will have an impact on the design of future chips, that is an open question,” he added.

URGENT, PLEASE READ AND FOLLOWUP. For the last two years I have been asking you all to get involved in the greatest injustice perpetrated on law enforcement. Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos have been locked up in Federal Prison long enough. The President has only a few days left to pardon these two Border Guards whose only crime was to shoot a drug smuggler in the rear end as he tried to escape capture. The man was carrying a large amount of drugs and was known to the Border Patrol as a mule for the cartels. I don’t know about you but I would rather have a drug smuggler with a bullet in his butt in prison than two guys who were defending my country. Federal Prosecutor, Johnny Sutton saw it differently and actually indemnified the smuggler so he could come here and testify. A few weeks later he was re arrested carrying more drugs to sell on our city streets. I guess he couldn’t get away so fast this time because he had a bullet in his butt. This travesty has gone on long enough. If anyone should be in prison it’s this prosecutor. Please take time right now to write to the White House and demand this pardon. This is a reprint of an article I posted several weeks ago and time is running out for these men.
REPRINT FROM NOVEMBER 12. 2008
One last time Mr. Bush, here’s your chance to redeem your self in the eyes of many. You have two Border Agents Compean and Ramos locked up in Federal Prison for doing what 90% of Americans wanted them to do. It’s in your power to commute their sentences and bring them back to their families. These men are hero’s to most Americans and are considered political prisoners by the Bush Administration. They should be released immediately and they should receive 100% of their back pay. Your Federal Prosecutor Johnny Sutton painted a picture of a poor itinerant Mexican just trying to make a living he met these two Border Agents who were on patrol in an area assigned to them to prevent smugglers and illegal aliens from entering the country. These two bullies shot this poor Mexican in cold blood in the rump as he tried to get away with his 700 pounds of dope. Come on Mr. Bush enough is enough. This Mexican who was shot was given immunity by Sutton to testify against these men and soon after was re arrested for smuggling even more dope into the country. If they had just aimed a little higher we would have less junk on our streets. These men have had to be placed in solitary confinement for their own protection as they are surrounded by Mexican drug smugglers in these prisons. It would be like you being placed in a prison with Al Qaeda prisoners who are sworn to kill you. What are you thinking Mr. President? What kind of deal with Mexico could you possibly have to keep these brave men incarcerated?
You have asked and received support from many of us for the war in Iraq. Actually we are embroiled in three wars Mr. President, Iraq, Afghanistan and the war on drugs which we are losing badly. We have documented cases of actual military incursions across our border where the Mexican Soldiers have guarded the escape of drug smugglers even firing their weapons in the process. All this and you let Sutton keep these two locked up in a living heii. I voted for you twice and I must say I am totally disappointed in your last term. Most of us were so proud of the way you took charge after 9/11 but you have failed badly in all areas of the domestic front. You have personally set back the Conservative Movement at least ten years. Please Mr. President I beseech you, release these men immediately and remove all stigma from their record. They and their families have suffered greatly at hands of your administration.
Ask the people of this Nation who they would call a hero, Scooter Libby whom you released immediately or Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean who are still locked up in prison. I guess if you’re not a Washington insider it just doesn’t count.
America it’s our fight now, we have do everything in our power to get these men released. They were doing their job trying to protect us when they were caught up in some insider event that I believe had nothing to do with what actually happened. The politics involved in this goes much deeper than just the wounding of a known drug smuggler. Cops shoot it out and wound drug dealers all the time and nothing ever is said about it, why then is this injustice still going on?
And that’s my Opinion,
Don

All of us should sit down and examine exactly why are we personally exercising. I train many people and get many responses on the reasons that these individuals take part in some type of physical activity. I have one married group that attends my camp, and I have never seen two individuals that exercise as much as they love each other. And yes, they exercise together. So they have to love each other equally! I once ask how do they seem to make the time and have the strength to exercise every single day. They responded that as long as one would get to exercise, then the other would basically have no choice but to get up also. Not saying that this has to be your reason for getting up and improving your health, but you need to have a reason that will make you get up on a daily basis to consistently improve your body and health.

When was the last time you've seen your physician? When you departed from the office, if he perscribed you any medication, he probably told you to do some type of exercise to improve your health. You have to understand that exercise is a cure and prevention mehod for a lot of illnesses out there. Most people feel that just because they may not be overweight, that they are in shape. Well how can you be in any physical shape if you haven't done any cardiovascular nor strentgh training methods of exercise since you were in high school. It's not what you look like on the outside, but how you feel on the inside. If you walk up a small flight of stairs and give out of breath, or if your toddler child runs from you, and have to catch them, but when you do you can't seem to get enough oxygen in your lungs because of lack of exercise, you are not physically healthy. You have to stop letting it get to the point where the doctor is prescribing medication and exercise, and just start exercising so that only can be your perscription for as long as you can help it.

Today is a sad, but joyful day for me. 3 years ago today, marked the begining of a new start for my life. We evacuated here from Katrina, and in the process we lost every and anything you could imagine having. 2 cars, house, all memorable assets. Except 3 pairs of clothes. I still have those pairs of clothing to reflect back on. I have been very blessed to have you all and all other persons that have supported any and everything positive, I've attempted to do in this city. I can't say it enough, Thank you all so much for making this a very exciting, smooth, transitioning experience for me as an evacuee. The compassion and concern that I have received has really impressed me the with people and the city of Montgomery. If you ever ask me how I'm doing and my answer is I can't complain, thats just it! When you've lost everything and gain that which you had, and so much more back, I'm just blessed to be here!

EPA on HOW TO CLEAN UP A NEW LIGHTBULB.
Humans use mercury in a variety of manufacturing processes and products such as thermometers and fluorescent bulbs. If you improperly dispose of products with mercury in them, they may break and release mercury vapors which are harmful to human and ecological health.
Dispose of used mercury-containing items properly.
Clean up mercury spills properly and report them to the proper authorities when necessary.
Spills
What Never to Do with a Mercury Spill
Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up mercury (but see the "What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks" section below for more specific instructions about vacuuming broken fluorescent light bulbs). The vacuum will put mercury into the air and increase exposure.
Never use a broom to clean up mercury. It will break the mercury into smaller droplets and spread them.
Never pour mercury down a drain. It may lodge in the plumbing and cause future problems during plumbing repairs. If discharged, it can cause pollution of the septic tank or sewage treatment plant.
Never wash clothing or other items that have come in direct contact with mercury in a washing machine, because mercury may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage. Clothing that has come into direct contact with mercury should be discarded. By "direct contact," we mean that mercury was (or has been) spilled directly on the clothing. For example:
if you broke a mercury thermometer and some of elemental mercury beads came in contact with your clothing, or
if you broke a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) so that broken glass and other material from the bulb, including mercury-containing powder, came into contact with your clothing.
You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, like the clothing you happened to be wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
Never walk around if your shoes might be contaminated with mercury. Contaminated clothing can also spread mercury around.
Top of page
What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are lighting more homes than ever before, and EPA is encouraging Americans to use and recycle them safely. Carefully recycling CFLs prevents the release of mercury into the environment and allows for the reuse of glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights.
EPA is continually reviewing its clean-up and disposal recommendations for CFLs to ensure that the Agency presents the most up-to-date information for consumers and businesses. Maine's Department of Environmental Protection released a CFL breakage study report
on February 25, 2008. EPA has conducted an initial review of this study and, as a result of this review, we have updated the CFL cleanup instructions below.
Pending the completion of a full review of the Maine study, EPA will determine whether additional changes to the cleanup recommendations are warranted. The agency plans to conduct its own study on CFLs after thorough review of the Maine study.
Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal below. Please also read the
information on this page about what never to do with a mercury spill. Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room
Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces
Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.
Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug
Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.
Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding and Other Soft Materials
If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.
You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.
Disposal of Clean-up Materials
Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup.
Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.
Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming
The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.
Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.
Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out. Make sure all pets are removed from the area. Open all windows and doors to the outside; shut all doors to other parts of the house.
DO NOT allow children to help you clean up the spill.
Mercury can be cleaned up easily from the following surfaces: wood, linoleum, tile and any similarly smooth surfaces.
If a spill occurs on carpet, curtains, upholstery or other absorbent surfaces, these contaminated items should be thrown away in accordance with the disposal means outlined below. Only cut and remove the affected portion of the contaminated carpet for disposal.
Cleanup Instructions
Put on rubber, nitrile or latex gloves.
If there are any broken pieces of glass or sharp objects, pick them up with care. Place all broken objects on a paper towel. Fold the paper towel and place in a zip lock bag. Secure the bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
Locate visible mercury beads. Use a squeegee or cardboard to gather mercury beads. Use slow sweeping motions to keep mercury from becoming uncontrollable. Take a flashlight, hold it at a low angle close to the floor in a darkened room and look for additional glistening beads of mercury that may be sticking to the surface or in small cracked areas of the surface. Note: Mercury can move surprising distances on hard-flat surfaces, so be sure to inspect the entire room when "searching."
Use the eyedropper to collect or draw up the mercury beads. Slowly and carefully squeeze mercury onto a damp paper towel. Place the paper towel in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department.
After you remove larger beads, put shaving cream on top of small paint brush and gently "dot" the affected area to pick up smaller hard-to-see beads. Alternatively, use duct tape to collect smaller hard-to-see beads. Place the paint brush or duct tape in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department.
OPTIONAL STEP: It is OPTIONAL to use commercially available powdered sulfur to absorb the beads that are too small to see. The sulfur does two things: (1) it makes the mercury easier to see since there may be a color change from yellow to brown and (2) it binds the mercury so that it can be easily removed and suppresses the vapor of any missing mercury. Where to get commercialized sulfur? It may be supplied as mercury vapor absorbent in mercury spill kits, which can be purchased from laboratory, chemical supply and hazardous materials response supply manufacturers. Note: Powdered sulfur may stain fabrics a dark color. When using powdered sulfur, do not breathe in the powder as it can be moderately toxic. Additionally, users should read and understand product information before use.
If you choose not to use this option, you may want to request the services of a contractor who has monitoring equipment to screen for mercury vapors. Consult your local environmental or health agency to inquire about contractors in your area. Place all materials used with the cleanup, including gloves, in a trash bag. Place all mercury beads and objects into the trash bag. Secure trash bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
Contact your local health department, municipal waste authority or your local fire department for proper disposal in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Remember to keep the area well ventilated to the outside (i.e., windows open and fans in exterior windows running) for at least 24 hours after your successful cleanup. Continue to keep pets and children out of cleanup area. If sickness occurs, seek medical attention immediately. View information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury. For additional information on health effects, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) provides a Mercury Fact Sheet
that also presents information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury.
Recommendation: If there are young children or pregnant women in the house, seek additional advice from your local or state health or state environmental agency.

Spills of More than the Amount in a Thermometer, but Less Than or Similar to Two Tablespoons (One Pound) Cleanup Instructions
1. Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out.
2. Open all windows and doors to the outside.
3. Turn down the temperature.
4. Shut all doors to other parts of the house, and leave the area.
Don't vacuum.
5. Call your local or state health or environmental agency.

Spills of More than Two Tablespoons (One Pound)
Any time one pound or more of mercury is released to the environment, it is mandatory to call the National Response Center (NRC). The NRC hotline operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (800) 424-8802. Note that because mercury is heavy, only two tablespoons of mercury weigh about one pound.

I just don't have time! That's the excuse that has made so many people neglect his or her body and become occupied with every other aspect of life. We have to start thinking about ourselves at least some of the time. The only way you can support any and everything operating in your life is for your body to be healthy and strong. Time should not be your excuse for not exercising at least 30 minutes out of your 24 hour day. If you need some exercises, go to www.myspace.com/resolutioncamp, click videos under the photo to the left and use the exercises that Resolution Fitness provides for your personal fitness use.

When you begin to incorporate strength training into your exercise regiment, you have to know that it's not going to be easy. You have to take the little strength that you do have, and begin to gain strength from that. You may have to start out doing light weights with heavy repitition to gain that strength. You can't get discouraged with the progression of your strength because gaining strength doesn't happen over night. Each day you should increase you repitions so that you can gain strength. Just know, the more consistent you are with your regiment, the more defined, comfortable, and confident you will become with your body!

When you are exercising, you have to make sure that you are focused and concentrating at all times. The least little movement could cause some type of injury. I know that after you have done so many repetitions of various exercises, you muscles begin to burn, and you want to do whatever it takes to get the task done. That is the time you need to focus on what you are doing the most. When your body gets tired, your brain does also, and you don't think as clear at that point. Just try and continue to focus on your exercises, and use the strength you have to create more strength!

I was speaking with an individual just the other day about how can she get in shape, because the small meals and exercise has made her hit a plateau. Well, as I always do, I asked a series of questions about her exercise regiments and eating habits. The food and beverages that she says she intakes, seemed to be some healthy choices. She also said that she exercised at least 3 days per week. Well, lets keep it real, if you are still obese off of eating healthier foods, that means you're really not eating too healthy. Because you do not need exercise to lose weight. It helps promote weight loss, but the majority of the weight loss will come from what you put into your body. I explained this to her, then here comes the truth. She loved to eat sweets, has a sit down job, always snack eating at her desk, and eats late at night. Those 4 responses will definitely be hinder you from getting to the weight, and body shape that you would like to have. If you are seeking help, first keep it real with yourself, because only you know how your lifestyle is. And if you are overweight or very small, please don't tell people that you are eating healthy. If you eat poorly, say it! If you don't exercise, say it! At least you are admitting you downfall, and can then begin to help to living a healthier lifestyle.
