It's about to be the start of a new year.  We all had admirations of getting ourselves healthier for the year of 2008.  Some of you hung in there and became consistent with a exercise regiment and healthier eating.  Others had ups and downs trying to manage these habits with everyday life.  It's never too late!  I've heard many say that he or she will start getting themselves together after the holidays.  Well, why not begin before the holidays, so that you will arleady have a base going into the new year.  After the holiday, you may just put on 5 - 10 lbs. oppose to losing that same amount with the help of discipline.  If you need help with a exercise program, Resolution Camp is there year round for you.  It's time to stop talking about it and just do it.  It's better late that never!

All of us should sit down and examine exactly why are we personally exercising.  I train many people and get many responses on the reasons that these individuals take part in some type of physical activity.  I have one married group that attends my camp, and I have never seen two individuals that exercise as much as they love each other.  And yes, they exercise together.  So they have to love each other equally!  I once ask how do they seem to make the time and have the strength to exercise every single day.  They responded that as long as one would get to exercise, then the other would basically have no choice but to get up also.  Not saying that this has to be your reason for getting up and improving your health, but you need to have a reason that will make you get up on a daily basis to consistently improve your body and health.

When was the last time you've seen your physician?  When you departed from the office, if he perscribed you any medication, he probably told you to do some type of exercise to improve your health.  You have to understand that exercise is a cure and prevention mehod for a lot of illnesses out there.  Most people feel that just because they may not be overweight, that they are in shape.  Well how can you be in any physical shape if you haven't done any cardiovascular nor strentgh training methods of exercise since you were in high school.  It's not what you look like on the outside, but how you feel on the inside.  If you walk up a small flight of stairs and give out of breath, or if your toddler child runs from you, and have to catch them, but when you do you can't seem to get enough oxygen in your lungs because of lack of exercise, you are not physically healthy.  You have to stop letting it get to the point where the doctor is prescribing medication and exercise, and just start exercising so that only can be your perscription for as long as you can help it.

Today is a sad, but joyful day for me.  3 years ago today, marked the begining of a new start for my life.  We evacuated here from Katrina, and in the process we lost every and anything you could imagine having.  2 cars, house, all memorable assets.  Except 3 pairs of clothes.  I still have those pairs of clothing to reflect back on.  I have been very blessed to have you all and all other persons that have supported any and everything positive, I've attempted to do in this city.  I can't say it enough, Thank you all so much for making this a very exciting, smooth, transitioning experience for me as an evacuee.  The compassion and concern that I have received has really impressed me the with people and the city of Montgomery.  If you ever ask me how I'm doing and my answer is I can't complain, thats just it!  When you've lost everything and gain that which you had, and so much more back, I'm just blessed to be here!

I just don't have time!  That's the excuse that has made so many people neglect his or her body and become occupied with every other aspect of life.  We have to start thinking about ourselves at least some of the time.  The only way you can support any and everything operating in your life is for your body to be healthy and strong.  Time should not be your excuse for not exercising at least 30 minutes out of your 24 hour day.  If you need some exercises, go to www.myspace.com/resolutioncamp, click videos under the photo to the left and use the exercises that Resolution Fitness provides for your personal fitness use.

When you begin to incorporate strength training into your exercise regiment, you have to know that it's not going to be easy.  You have to take the little strength that you do have, and begin to gain strength from that.  You may have to start out doing  light weights with heavy  repitition to gain that  strength.  You can't get discouraged with the progression of your strength because gaining strength doesn't happen over night.  Each day you should increase you repitions so that you can gain strength.  Just know, the more consistent you are with your regiment, the more defined, comfortable, and confident  you will become with your body!

When you are exercising, you have to make sure that you are focused and concentrating at all times.  The least little movement could cause some type of injury.  I know that after you have done so many repetitions of various exercises, you muscles begin to burn, and you want to do whatever it takes to get the task done.  That is the time you need to focus on what you are doing the most.  When your body gets tired, your brain does also, and you don't think as clear at that point.  Just try and continue to focus on your exercises, and use the strength you have to create more strength!

I was speaking with an individual just the other day about how can she get in shape, because the small meals and exercise has made her hit a plateau.  Well, as I always do, I asked a series of questions about her exercise regiments and eating habits.  The food and beverages that she says she intakes, seemed to be some healthy choices.  She also said that she exercised at least 3 days per week.  Well, lets keep it real, if you are still obese off of eating healthier foods, that means you're really not eating too healthy.   Because you do not need exercise to lose weight.  It helps promote weight loss, but the majority of the weight loss will come from what you put into your body.  I explained this to her, then here comes the truth.  She loved to eat sweets, has a sit down job, always snack eating at her desk, and eats late at night.  Those 4 responses will definitely be hinder you from getting to the weight, and body shape that you would like to have.  If you are seeking help, first keep it real with yourself, because only you know how your lifestyle is.  And if you are overweight or very small, please don't tell people that  you are eating healthy.  If you eat poorly, say it!  If you don't exercise, say it!  At least you are admitting you downfall, and can then begin to help to living a healthier lifestyle.

When I hear many individuals speak about there exercise regiments, It always involves cardio vascular exercises or some form of yoga (stretching).  I don't think you forget, but just don't want to take the time out to incorporate some form of strength training in  your regiment.   That's probably because it hurts.  Even though strethching and cardio are great for you,  you need to start thinking about when you begin to age and your muscles begin to deteriorate.  It has to have muscle to eat away at or you will just become a frail soul.  I trained a female named Deborah once, and she would come to a resistance training class of mine faithfully.  I knew she had strength and was in shape because I trained her.  She came to me one day and told me that her doctor said that she was losing muscle density because of her lack of strength.  That was interesting to me because I do recommend clients and individuals to incorporate resistance training in his or her workout.  I thought about it and got back with her.  The reason she was losing muscle is because she wasn't doing any weight training to actually help build some muscle mass.  When I figured that out, I immediately when back to lifting weights because I had stopped for a year and only did resistance training.  When I started back weight training, I didn't stop doing my resistance training because I want to keep my muscles long, but I could tell how much strength I had lost in a year's time of no weight training.  Just seeing my loss of strength, and to hear a story as Deborah's, I don't see myself letting go of the weight training anymore.  I'm not saying you should lift heavy weights, but enough to help you continuously build muscle and strength.

You can't continue to try to eat and drink any that you want, exercise 3 days a week for one hour, and think that that's going to do it for you.  You could exercise seven days a week, but if you're not intaking the more healthier foods to either help you lose weight, maintain, or gain, you'll never get to the point to where you want to be.  Your eating really depicts how your body will change.  You have to take baby steps to teach yourself how to eat healthier.  You have to  start out by substituting foods that you eat for the same foods.  If you like to eat rice, don't eat white rice, change to brown or yellow rice.  If you like to eat fried foods, try and transition to eating more baked and grilled foods.  If you use lots of salt, change to more seasoning salts.  Please make sure when you go out to eat, try and get one of the more healthier things on the menu.  Just because you are out to eat doesn't mean you have to have the worse item on the menu.  This is the time you should try and eat more healthy with smaller portions because most of us spend our time at some type of restaurant do to our busy schedules.  Just remember that you will not give up everything over night, but over time you will observe yourself become a more committed and healthier eater.

Many individuals approach me the day after they have had an intense workout, and they explain that his or her muscles are very sore.  Well, first and foremost you need to know that that is going to happen and you should be ready for it.  Then you need to know certain methods that could help decrease the amount of days that you are actually sore.  So Ms. Donna Franklin, my fitness parter, sent me over some information that I would like to share with you.

Treating Muscle soreness
1. Practice self-massage. After completing your workout, showering, and drying off, rub some more Sportsbalm into the muscles you just used during the workout. Use either your hands or a device such as 'The Stick'. This will keep circulation levels up and accelerate recovery.
2. Ice your sore areas, or take an ice bath if you can stand it. Post-exercise muscle soreness is caused not so much by the muscle damage itself as by the inflammation that occurs as a natural part of the healing process. This is why you tend to be more sore 24 to 48 hours after intense exercise than you are immediately afterward. Icing your sore spots and taking ice baths are the best ways of reducing inflammation without inhibiting tissue repair.
3. Stretch. Stretching is another good way to increase circulation and accelerate tissue repair. It also has the effect of immediately increasing mobility, which can be compromised by muscle soreness.
4. Consume protein immediately after your workouts. The faster you get protein into your body, the faster your body can go to work repairing muscle damage. Always consume plenty of carbohydrate, to restore energy, and fluids for rehydration following workouts as well.
5. Maintain a diet high in antioxidants, and especially vitamin E, which has been proven to reduce free radical damage to muscle tissues in athletes.

How long can you make the excuse that oh,  it's just baby fat!  I figure, and I only know from observations, any where from just after pregnancy to possibly when the child is 1 year old, this excuse is acceptable.  Any time passed and weight gain after that is called the, (ISPS)  I'm Still Pregnant Syndrome.  This comes from unhealthy eating and lack of exercise.  If your child is in the age range of 2 1/2 and up and you didn't have kids back to back, you are no longer able to use the ISPS excuse.  You have to get up and lets get it together.  If you need some help, get in contact with me to see when the next session of Resolution Camp that fits your schedule will begin.  my fitness partner, Donna Franklin, and I would be more than happy to help assist you in dropping that Baby Fat!

I was born in the year 1982, in Montgomery, AL. My family would relocate 7 years later to New Orleans, LA, because of an occupation transfer. For the next 16 years, I would be a resident of New Orleans,Louisiana, where I attended East Jefferson High School. I then went on to obtain a bachelor's degree, May 22, 2005, from Grambling State University in Grambling, LA. For the next 3 months, I worked for AAA roadside assistance in Metairie, LA. On Saturday August 27, 2005, my family and I evacuated back to Montgomery, from our home in New Orleans East to escape the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Two days after evacuation, Katrina left my family and I with nothing but the support from my extended family and the generous people of Montgomery, AL. In September of the same year, I was presented a front desk job at Southeast YMCA. Upper management noticed my discipline and will to get in shape and asked me if I wouldn't mind going through proper procedures to become a fitness trainer. Every since that opportunity had been presented, I have capitalized on the opportunity to help people live healthier lifestyles. I now have my own independent fitness camps (Resolution Camp) at Shakespeare Park and Brewbaker Primary School. I am a fitness trainer for the Hillwood YMCA of Montgomery, and Vaughn Meadows Apartments. I have performed fitness programs for the ladies of the state legislature, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, and am currently the fitness consultant for MyFox Montgomery. I want to thank the Woods family for all of the opportunities they've presented me with. Also I want to thank everyone from Resolution Camp and anyone who has supported any and everything that I've tried to do positive for the city of Montgomery.
